The challenge

As email is Rakuten’s primary means of communicating with subscribers and customers, the company wanted to use this channel to promote their mobile application. So far, Rakuten was not able to identify which operating systems recipients were using to open these emails. Rakuten was looking for displaying a banner at the top of the email, encouraging people to download the mobile app, but only wanted the banner to appear when recipients opened the email on a smartphone.
